Fall 2017 Colors

Note from Meg:  This post was originally published in September of 2014.  The crazy part?  It still applies to Fall 2017 Colors!  I've made a few alterations, and I'm excited to re-share it!

Family Portrait Sessions at Walck Portraits

Making use of fall colors:

As photographers we have learned how to make the best use out of the fall colors.  We would like to share a little of that with you to help you plan your photo session timing!

1) Your photos are about you, not the background.  Remember that!  If you love the outdoors, and want a giant scenic vista, do you really want a photo of YOU, or a photo of the vista?  I'm not saying that the background is not important, as it really really is.  I'm saying that you are the focus in your photo session, and we use the background to compliment the look you are going for.  That means that the background is not the main attraction of the image.

2) You want the "Fall Look".  Great!  I love it!  To get the "Fall Look" - I only need 1 tree that has changed colors.  Just 1.  This means that we can shoot fall photos from early september straight through the beginning of November.  Of course, there are scenes that will look fantastic with lots and lots of turned trees, but - it isn't fully necessary to have an entire forest of full colored earth tones in order to have the best photo shoot you have ever had :)

3) Tim!  What do I wear!?!?   Easy - Earth tones.  Keep it simple.  Blue jeans, forest green, wine, navy blue.  Jeans and a white shirt are always a winner!  (Plus that portrait can move to any room in your house because jeans and a white shirt go with every thing).  At the same time though, you can use a single color that really pops from the landscape, like teal, mint, yellow, or pink.  To make a color that pops really work, you must be cautious to keep the outfit as simple as possible.   Steer clear of big logos on clothes, or fancy flat brimmed hats if you want fall photos in a fall setting.  I know... it may be your style to wear those clothes.  But, if that is the case, lets find a setting that will really show off your style :)

Competition? What Competition?

Photo Courtesy of Studio V. Photography Often, we are asked how we make our photography business thrive when there are so many competitors out there, especially in a rural and isolated location like ours.  Sure, there are mom-togs, those who do it for a hobby, those who undercut our prices, those that far out price us, those that offer downloads, free prints, etc., etc.  After all, in a boutique business like ours, people are going to either love our work or hate it.  They're either going to come to us or go somewhere else.  That's okay.  We're here to help those people that love our style, our personalities, and our art.  Sometimes what we offer doesn't fit the customer's choice.  That is okay. Hopefully we can help them out in some other way.  Perhaps we can give them guidance on what to wear , a checklist for wedding preparations , or even recommendations for a colleague that might suit them better. Liz Valentine's Headshot Session

As always, we had a blast with Liz!  Her fun, happy, energetic personality is SO contagious! Liz is the owner/operator of Studio V Media & Photography in Port Allegany, and we often work together, weather we are taking pictures for each other's families, talking "shop", or just hanging out for some fun. For this shoot, Liz has just become the proud new owner of a Cannon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.  If you don't know what that means - it is a REALLY BIG LENS that EVERY photographer wants, and once they have it... it becomes part of their family.  Its generally one of the most favorited pieces of glass ever created - so, yes, it is worth getting a photo shoot for yourself to celebrate the occasion!

So You Want To Be A Photographer?

Are you interested in becoming a photographer?  Do you want to turn your passion for creating images into a source of income to support yourself and your family? Tim Walck Photography will soon be offering online courses in photography training, and portrait business training.  Each course will span 4-8 weeks.  Every student who participates in all classes will gain the tools necessary to succeed in the wedding and portrait photography business. ---- I started my photography business with only $2,000, which I had saved from working as a tele-marker, social services provider, and substitute teacher, all while being a full time graduate student at Mansfield University.  That was enough to buy a camera, lens, and flash.  I poured my heart and soul into photography, read everything I could get my hands on, and began to build my business.  After 3 short years of juggling multiple jobs, and being a photographer on the side, I made the leap into phot...
